Question A question for the old school heads about crate digging

What was the first instance you can remember the term "crate digging" or "digging in the crates" in a rap song? Or even before it was a rap lyric? How far back does this slang term go?

    Name names if possible.

I first heard it on Diamond D's first album. Im sure there were other synonyms for it before that but they didn't really stick with me for some reason.

^^^^ Yeah, Showbiz & AG had the song Diggin' In The Crates on their first EP in '91.

Just like everyone has said already I'm sure it was a DITC thing.
    Either Diamond or AG.

Thought it was common knowledge that it was first mentioned on the Soul Clap EP.

Finesse speaks on the terms origins with DITC in the Deep Crates documentary as well.

I've always thought it a bit weird how many people talk about 'digging' these days and mean completely different things, i.e. looking for samples, checking out records you might've never heard before, browsing at record stores/flea markets etc. to kids buying some brand new release at some retail outlet.

I think James Lavelle made it up together with "take it to the bridge", "fresh" and "daddio" in the mid to late '90s. Some sneaky time travellers stole his ideas though.
