Mapping the History of Westwood on Radio

Thought it might be a bright idea to look back through the history of Westwood on radio. Might be good to source more of the sessions/ freestyles/ interviews/ f**k ups from over the years. There is alotta knowledge round these parts, so add on if you remember any detail, any; time-slots/ when the LA GEAR Capital Rap Exchange started with Marley Marl.

The folks over at Phila came up with this after mapping the dates of the Stretch & Bobb shows, the info comes in proper handy - http://stretchandbobbito.blogspot.co.uk/

I've listed a few random shows below as reference points, but add on whatever detail you have, no matter how ambiguous you think it is. I dont have all of these below, I took the info from shows that I do have...

I can probably help with this. Still have loads of Westwood tapes. Some have been digitised by Step One for his dope blog. Just wish I had written the dates on 'em when I recorded 'em back in the day!

I've got a massive cardboard box full of Westwood tapes from the very first few Radio 1 shows in '94 up to 2003 at my Dad's place. Need to sort through them and rip them some time this decade.

If I remember correctly, Sat January 25th 1995 and Sat February 21st 1995 were monthly Hot 97 Rap Exchanges from NY with Flex. Group Home, Nas, Mobb Deep, ODB, Raekwon and perhaps some others up in the studio 'freestyling' (ie performing rhymes off their album tracks). Forget who was on which show but it was definitely those two dates, as I used to rinse them heavily. Also I think it was during the January show Flex started cutting back and forth between the original version of Jeru's 'Can't Stop The Prophet' and the Pete Rock remix, which sounded amazing, before blending into Nine's 'Whutcha Want'.

Also obviously August 1997 (forget the exact date) was the infamous KRS-One show..... (though I always felt Westwood came out of the spat fairly well, while Kris just came across as a bit of a dick).

Also some time around April 1998, Westwood had Huw and Kam from Bongos and Tony from Deal Real in the studio talking (over the instrumental of Smut Peddlers' 'One By One', no less!) about the whole independent scene, Rawkus and Fondle 'Em etc,. that was blowing up at the time. They spoke about how their stores fit into that scene and how they helped push and break certain records.

Each of them picked a record that was hot at the time - I remember Da Grassroots' 'Drama', Ugly Duckling's 'Fresh Mode' and Dilated Peoples' 'Work The Angles' were all played. I'm certain it was the first time I heard 'Work the Angles' and it just blew my mind.

I'll give it a go. Most of mine just have the month at best but might be able to figure it out by process of elmination. Be great to get them all one site like the Stretch & Bobbito one.

This could be an excellent resource, I wonder if the beeb has any archive facility for old Radio 1 schedules anywhere?
